Duke Nukem Forever Lives

Duke Nukem Forever Gearbox

Everybody’s favourite piece of VapourWare, Duke Nukem Forever (which narrowly beat out the Phantom Console for first place), is set for a new lease of life. Borderlands creator Gearbox Software have been officially revealed as the new team sent into the fires of development hell to retrieve the game.

It’s been rumoured for the past few weeks that Gearbox would be taking charge, and following an article on the Wall Street Journal’s website today, it has now been confirmed by their CEO Randy Pitchford at the Penny Arcade Expo.

The developer have been working on the game since 2009, taking over from the now defunct 3D Realms (who had been working on it since 1997, up until their demise). It’s due for release in 2011 and, unlike 3D Realms, we think they’re being sincere.

Says Pitchford, “Clearly the game hadn’t been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created. The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It’s the game it was meant to be.”

“We’re in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill. We need to get past the shock and awe and then we can go to all the retailers and first parties and work out a launch plan.”
