Two weeks. A fortnight. 14 days. In reality, it’s not that much, but for me it’s been a pretty significant period. For the past couple of weeks I’ve been away in the Isle of Man for the annual TT races, which were great by the way, but this little vacation meant a couple of things. A fortnight of sleeping in a tent, coping with dodgy air beds, bugs and my Dad’s snoring, a whole lot of sitting around waiting for things to happen (only to be told that the day’s action has been cancelled), and more importantly than anything else, no gaming.
Now, I could quite easily have taken a DS or PSP, but keeping them charged when you’ve got five people competing for cigarette lighter spots to charge their phones was always going to be a losing battle. I’ll also admit that I had my iPod fully loaded with games available, but I was determined to go Cold Turkey on this one. And go Cold Turkey I did.
Despite having my stash with me at all times, and paying a visit to the local dealer to purchase more product (the one GAME store on the island), I managed to resist the lure of play for a whole two weeks. Not even for a quick bash on Bejeweled.
Of course, this does beg the question as to whether I could successfully manage such a barren spell if I weren’t hundreds of miles of land and sea away from my consoles. Pondering that for just a few seconds leads me to a relatively easy answer, that being “hell no”. However, it might be interesting to try sometime in the future. But before I even consider that, I’ve got a neatly wrapped copy of Super Mario Galaxy 2 to dig into, not to mention a neglected Xbox that hopefully won’t give me a crimson wink when I try to turn it back on. Wish me luck!
